There is no doubt the impact a service dog can have on the lives of veterans when they partner with canine companions. I remember Saturday night last year at a country music fest when Mark “Oz” Geist was the recipient of a new K9. There wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd. Geist is one of the survivors of the Annex Security Team in Benghazi, Libya.

“God bless everyone,” Geist told the crowd from the stage. “God bless America, and let’s have a great time tonight.” I was fortunate enough to be at the front of the stage to witness this amazing moment, and now I want to share more about what Sierra Delta is doing to put an end to the critical shortage of service dogs for our military heroes.

Sierra Delta helps supply service dogs to veterans. There are millions of veterans who are struggling with engaging in the communities they sacrificed so much to protect. Sierra Delta has developed an innovative way to remove the barriers veterans face in this process. Only 1 in 150 vets in need of service dogs are currently served.

Sierra Delta’s mission is to support more veterans by partnering them with trained canine companions. By increasing access and improving efficiency we can eliminate the critical shortage of service dogs for our military heroes and the euthanizing of large adoptable rescue dogs. Service dogs provide necessary therapy options for veterans coping with both visible and invisible wounds.

Although I cannot relate to the need to have a service dog, our two Great Danes are our babies. We lost our first one to a heart attack when he was 9-month’s-old.
